sleepwall asked: Yesterday, I revealed to my dad that I would like to work with art, illustration and stuff. He was very upset, saying that this is no future for no one and stuff... I know that it is not a very secure job, but honestly, I can't imagine myself working in anything else. So I would like to ask you: How it feels to be an illustrator? I mean... Is it easy for you/anybody? How did you manage to live in NY and work there? How was your life before you started to work there?

I think a lot of parents feel this way, and rightly so. It’s a very difficult profession in which to make a living, and only a small percentage of those who try succeed. I am lucky enough to have very supportive parents, and I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for people who don’t. I’m still struggling. The living expenses of New York make it particularly difficult.

However, I also firmly believe that you should pursue whatever you truly want to be doing, even if that thing is extremely difficult and somewhat unrealistic. Don’t settle for anything less.
